Modest Fashion Friday: Ladylike in Lace and Heels

teal-and-grey1

This week’s outfit post features a lovely, ladylike look. The lace yolk on the blouse and the cloche style hat make for a pretty combination that, though soft and feminine, isn’t too fussy. The grey skirt and nude pumps ground the look and keep it from being over the top. A top like this, if styled with pieces that were too busy or flowing, could become costume-like.

This outfit has a romantic feel to it. It’s even a bit Downton Abbey-esque, isn’t it? I love wearing it. Wearing clothes with lace detailing always makes me happy.

You know what else makes me very, very happy?

Hats.

I love hats. I have a fairly large collection. Okay, okay, it’s like my scarf collection (which is excessive). There’s something about wearing a beautiful hat that gives me a sense of freedom. That may sound strange, but it is true. A great hat gives me a feeling of confidence I don’t get from any other fashion item. (Although a really amazing pair of shoes is pretty great, too.)

If you follow me on Instagram, you may recognize this quote. But I think it bears repeating here:

“Fashion is a sort of communication. It is a language without words. A great hat speaks for itself.” ~Author unknown

Books I Read This Fall (That You’ll Want to Read, Too)

books-read-fall

Reading is a passion for me. I love to read books from many different genres and on many different topics. Generally, I read an average of one book a week. I haven’t read as many books lately as I usually do, though. Things have been so busy around our home (lets be honest, things are always busy around here!). We’ve also done quite a bit of traveling in the past couple of months. So, I haven’t had as much time to read as I would have liked.

The books I did have time to read this fall were good ones (with one exception—which I will discuss in a moment). Most of them were light, fun reads. When I’m especially busy in my day to day life, a good lighthearted book can be a great way to rest my mind.

Some of the books I read this fall, though, had a bit more substance to them. It’s always good to challenge your mind or expand your way of thinking. Reading can be a way to stretch yourself and prompt personal growth. Never settle for staying in the same place for too long. If you’re feeling stagnant, read a book that challenges your thinking.

All that to say, the list of books I read this fall covers a wide variety of types and topics. It’s an eclectic mix of reading. Maybe by sharing this widely varied list, though, I can help you discover a new addition to your own to-read list.

Without further ado, here they are…

These Is My Words by Nancy Turner

These Is My Words by Nancy E. Turner

This book is a fictionalized account of the life of an actual woman who lived in Arizona in the mid  nineteenth to early twentieth century. It is both entertaining and poignant. It’s written as if it were the main character’s journal entries, told entirely from her perspective. This is a book that is touching, funny, and well written. I highly recommend it. Perfect for a cozy winter evening!
Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

Ever since I read What Alice Forgot (which I highly recommend, by the way), Liane Moriarty has been an author I’ve been interested in reading more from. Moriarty is an Australian author who writes what I would categorize as chick lit with a twist. Her books are highly entertaining and yet they have an unexpected depth and substance to them.

Big Little Lies starts (like many of Moriarty’s books) at the end of the story. Through flashbacks, pieces of the story are filled in and things begin to fall into place. The story line—flashbacks and all—follow the lives of several families in a coastal town in Australia. The lives of these characters are interwoven in intricate and sometimes unexpected ways. As the story unfolds, we see glimpses of what’s really happening, and it’s not what you might think at first. As with all of Moriarty’s books (at least the ones I’ve read) there is a major plot twist at the very end.

Children in Church by Curt and Sandra Lovelace

I actually read a large portion of this book in article form almost a decade ago. Having personally known the Lovelaces for many years, I and my family have benefited from their personal guidance over the years. The wisdom and practical advice found in this book are invaluable. The Lovelaces lay a solid basis for children’s involvement in the church worship service, and then give useful ways to implement this with our own families. We had the privilege of sitting and learning at the feet of these wonderfully godly people; now you can, too.

Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki

Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki

As I mentioned in my Fall Lifestyle Favorites post, this book challenged my thinking about finances in a way I never expected. It’s considered a classic amongst entrepreneurial types and those interested in building financial security. This book made me realize how much I didn’t understand about the way money works. I’d always been a bit intimidated by finances before, but reading this book helped me realized I don’t need to feel that way. In a nutshell, I’m so glad I read this book. I’m glad that when I read it, I was in a place to be able to receive the information contained in it.

Building a Framework by Abby Lawson

This is a book about blogging. Since I’m a blogger, it was perfect for me (obviously). There is so much to learn and do when it comes to blogging. A lot goes on behind the scenes of a blog that (if it’s done right) the readers never even realize. This book helped me learn how to implement some strategies that can help my efforts as a blogger to be successful. Hopefully, those strategies will ultimately help you as my blog readers to receive value from what I do here on Mud Boots and Pearls. I’m grateful that Abby wrote this ebook from her own experiences and shared what she learned in order to help other bloggers.

Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty

Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty

Truly Madly Guilty is Liane Moriarty newest book. In all honesty cannot recommend this one quite as highly as the other Moriarty books I already mentioned above. This is due mainly to the fact that certain more mature subject matter is covered quite extensively. I would not have chosen to read this book if I had known about some of the topics that are delved into in this book.

It is written in the author’s typical “start at the end” style, with the typical plot twists you would expect from this author. There’s a backyard barbecue where something terrible happens. You don’t learn about this terrible thing that happened until more that two thirds of the way through the book. The build up to the event actually becomes a bit tedious, more so than in Moriarty’s other books (at least in my opinion).

There is some strong language and, as I mentioned, mature content. Because of these elements, I really can’t recommend this particular book. I just want you to be aware of these things. Just because an author has one or two (or more) books you like doesn’t mean all of their books will be as good.

I hope this list gave you some ideas for future reading. Do you have any book recommendations to share in the comments? I’d love to hear them if you’d care to share.

12 Clever Ideas for Organizing a Scarf Collection

scarf-collection-organization

Okay, I will admit it. I am rather obsessed with scarves. My scarf collection is extensive. And by extensive, I mean excessive.

I just can’t seem to help myself. No matter how much I tell myself I don’t need any more scarves, another little beauty comes to my attention, and next thing I know, I’m taking it home with me.

It’s just that scarves really are the perfect accessory. They can dress up (or down) any outfit. They can tie separate clothing pieces together, helping to make a look cohesive and complete. And they can provide that necessary pop of color to a an otherwise simple outfit.

There is such an array of styles, color, patterns, and fabrics to choose from when choosing a scarf. It’s no wonder my philosophy is “You can never have too many scarves or too many books.”

So, as you can see, I’m fully settled in my justification of my scarf collection. I am, at this point, unapologetic about the entire situation regarding the number of scarves I own.

There is only one problem with the size of said scarf collection. I have to find somewhere to keep all of them when I’m not wearing them.

This may not be a problem for most normal scarf collections. But as I’ve stated, mine is not normal. At last count, I believe I owned around 35 scarves. And I actually do wear most of them on a fairly regular basis.

I know, I know.

I told you it was excessive.

So, what am I supposed to do with all these scarves when I’m not wearing them?

A while back, I did a little research and came up with several good options for scarf storage.

Here are some of the best ones: (Images have clickable links.)

Here’s another…

And another…

This is a fun one…

This one is unusual…

Here’s more…

Just a couple more…

This is the one I decided to use in my own closet. The framework of the hanger is smooth, so it will not snag more delicate scarves. It holds a ton of scarves as well. I can (almost) fit my entire collection on this one hanger. It also makes it easy to see all the scarves.

I hope this gives you some ideas on how to store your own scarf collection.

So,tell me, do you have as many scarves as I do?

Speaking of scarves, did you know I’m giving away a beautiful, soft, cozy plaid blanket scarf? Really, I am. Would you like to be the one to receive it? Then enter the giveaway and you may be chosen to win!

Modest Fashion Friday: How to Style Dresses With Pants

leopard-dress-pants

I’m not one to follow every single trend that comes along. Some trends come and go and I never even try them. I know what works with my own personal style, and if the trend fits in with that, then I will make it work for me.

As Coco Chanel famously said, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.”

The current trend of wearing pants with dresses is one I have really enjoyed making work for me. I am a dress wearing kind of gal. Wearing a dress gives me a sense of femininity and has a ladylike quality. But sometimes a girl just needs the practicality a pair of pants provides. Enter the dresses over pants trend. It’s truly a fabulous trend.

Here are 3 examples of how I make this trend work for me. Most of these dresses are not ones I would wear on their own—they are just too short for me to be comfortable in. But add a pair of pants underneath, and the modesty level has been raised to a point I’m comfortable with.

This first outfit is so much fun to wear. It has a certain sophistication, but it also gives off a fun feel. The navy slim ankle pant worn with the blue flats looks chic and put together.

leopard-dress-pants2

The leopard print dress is the only piece of animal print I own. I like the fact that it is not your typical leopard print. It has a lovely subdued, softened quality that is more in keeping with my personal style than most animal prints. I added a grey infinity scarf to it, which breaks up the print. The scarf also helps to balance the proportions of the outfit.

This next look is a beautiful fully lined chiffon dress in navy. I’ve paired it with a pair of taupe jeans and booties. This look has such an air of elegance. The fabric makes this dress floaty and etherial and the slim look of the jeans balances out the fullness of the dress.

These booties are a favorite of mine. They’re so versatile and go with so many different outfits.

The necklace I wore with this outfit is very special to me. It was lovingly made for me by my very talented son. He does such beautiful work; I’m so proud to wear this gorgeous piece of art around my neck.

This third look is a more casual outfit. It has a boho chic vibe going on. It’s extremely comfortable and perfect for kicking around the house (which is what I did on the day I took these photos). This purple dress is made of linen, but it is heavy enough that it works well for fall. Duster cardigans like the one I wore with this outfit are another trend I can really make work for me. And my favorite booties again make an appearance in this outfit.

These bootcut jeans are a thrift store find I’ve had forever. They are extremely comfortable and fit me perfectly.

Last but not least, I have to mention the earrings. These beauties take the boho vibe to a whole other level. They are by far my biggest and dangliest earrings, and I love them!

10 Must-Have Drugstore Beauty Finds

0-must-have-beauty-finds

I’m a drugstore makeup kind of gal. Don’t get me wrong—high end beauty items are wonderful, but a $25 eyeliner is not very realistic if you’re on a tight budget. Know what I mean?

In recent years, the quality of drugstore makeup has really improved. It’s not hard to discover really amazing beauty finds at really great prices.

Here is a list of 10 makeup items from the drugstore I use and love. Many of these items are ones I use on a daily basis. If you try them, I think you’ll find you love them, too.

1. Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer

This stuff works wonders. I have dark patches on my forehead and around my eyes due to melasma, and this concealer actually covers those patches quite well. It’s a rich, moisturizing formula that goes on smoothly and blends easily. I really like the applicator as well.

2. Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer

The shade of this bronzer is perfect for my fair complexion. It works great as a subtle contour or to bring some warmth and color to the complexion. Plus, it smells amazing! It’s like sniffing a tropical vacation.

3. Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Powerless Translucent Pressed Powder

This powder goes on lightly, has a nice sheer consistency and doesn’t get caked up after you’ve worn it for a while. I wears well and lasts for hours.

4. Covergirl Super Sizer Mascara

If you want gorgeous, voluminous lashes with one application, you have to try this mascara. It never clumps and it’s ophthalmologist approved (which is important if you’re like me and wear contact lenses).

5. Burt’s Bees Lipstick in Blush Basin

This lipstick is a beautiful mauve color. It’s the perfect “your lips but better” shade. The formula is rich and smooth and it goes on easily. Staying power is pretty good. And I like that the ingredients are fairly good for the most part.

6. Elf Makeup Brushes

These brushes are such high quality, it’s hard to believe they cost so little. Most makeup brushes this cheap are junk, but Elf’s brushes are extremely well made. You never have to worry about them shedding and they are so soft.

7. Wet ’n Wild Clear Brow Gel

This stuff is so cheap, yet it gets the job done. No worries about flaking or crustiness. Just a good strong hold throughout the day.

8. Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in Rose Petal

This is a cream blush that is on the dryer side, which makes application so easy. It goes on and blends into the skin like a dream. The color is a nice fresh pink that gives a beautiful flush to the cheeks without looking to obvious.

9. Covergirl Ready Set Gorgeous Foundation

For a drugstore foundation, this one has staying power! The coverage is great and it blends into the skin nicely.

10. Revlon Superlustrous lipstick in any shade

A classic that has been around for decades, this lipstick is a definite must try. The formula goes on smooth and looks beautiful. It feels comfortable to wear—not slippery or sticky. And the shade selection is huge!

Do you have any drugstore beauty favorites I didn’t mention? Please feel free to share them in the comments below.

Also, be sure to check out my giveaway! One winner will receive a beautiful plaid blanket scarf just like my own favorite scarf. Enter to win here.
