Christmas Movies Your Family Will Love

christmas-movies-your-family-will-love

We have a little tradition in our house. During the month of December, we watch as many Christmas themed movies together as we can find time for. We have some favorites we watch year after year, but we also try to add a few new ones each year as well. Our favorite Christmas movies cover a wide variety of genres, from comedies, to animated classics, to heart warming family films.

Maybe you have a similar tradition in your own home. Perhaps your family has a few Christmas movies you watch every year. But maybe you’re looking for some ideas for new holiday films to try this season.

If your family is anything like mine, you’ll be able to find a few new favorites among this list.

christmas-movies

The Star of Bethlehem

I start the list with this movie because it’s important to remember what the Christmas season is really all about. Every time I watch this movie, I get chills. It induces a spirit of awe in me with each viewing. It’s unlike any other Christmas movie I’ve ever seen. I guarantee if you watch this one, you’ll be amazed at the intricacies of God’s handiwork in the universe. Your heart will cry out in praise to Him—I know mine does whenever I see this film.

The Christmas Shoes

This one will make you cry. It’s a touching movie about love and about discovering what’s truly important in life. If you haven’t seen this one, you need to. We’ve all heard the song; the movie’s much, much better.

The Christmas Box

My grandmother gave me the book by Richard Paul Evans (which has become a holiday classic) when I was a teenager. The story stuck with me for a very long time. In my opinion, the movie is just as good as the book. I don’t want to give anything away if you’ve never seen it, but I will say that having now experienced the loss of a child, the story of this movie resonates with me on a much deeper level than I ever imagined it would when we first started our annual viewings of it.

The Timepiece

This movie is the prequel to The Christmas Box. It is a touching tale set during World War II. A very moving story of forgiveness and faith and the power of love. This one is also based on a book by Richard Paul Evans.

White Christmas

I really don’t need to say anything about this one, do I? Who hasn’t seen this movie? It’s definitely a time-tested holiday classic. It’s also one of my personal favorites. The music, the dancing, the story, it’s all absolutely perfect. Plus, the costumes are utterly gorgeous.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

Another classic everyone must see. The nostalgia attached to this one is almost as good as the actually movie itself. I love the scene where Linus is reciting the scripture passage from Luke 2 about the birth of Jesus. Another great reminder that “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

Elf

Such an entertaining movie, this is an all-time favorite of a couple of my kids. It’s fun and silly and sweet at times. (There are a couple of questionable scenes that might not be best for younger viewers, though.)

Christmas With the Kranks

This movie is hilarious! The concept is clever, and the execution is flawless. Another one that has a couple of questionable scenes for little ones, but overall a family friendly film.

 It’s a Wonderful Life

Another classic that bears mentioning because it is just such a great movie. I’m so attached to this movie—I have very fond memories of watching it as a little girl with my dad.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

A well known story told with a twist—a Muppets twist. For a movie with a whole bunch of weird puppets portraying the characters, it’s heart warming and has all the appeal of Dickens’ original tale. But it has something even better…Kermit the frog…as Bob Cratchit. Need I say more?

The Christmas Card

This movie is so sweet. It’s a love story set at Christmas time. The main characters are endearing, the story is interesting, and the message is positive. There are some really cute one-liners in this one, too. My husband loves to quote a specific handful of lines from this movie.

The Nativity Story

I’ll start and end this list with the same message. Jesus is at the center of Christmas. The Christmas story is about Him, His birth, the purpose for which He came to Earth, which was to die for the sins of His people. This movie beautifully portals the story of that first Christmas. We always watch this one on Christmas Eve. It’s a wonderful way to bring our focus back to the One who deserves our worship, not just on Christmas, but every single day of the year.

Any movies on this list you’ve never seen? I highly recommend you watch them. Who knows, one of these might just become a new favorite for you. Or maybe this list has reminded you of a forgotten favorite of your own that you’d like to view again. At any rate, I hope it’s given you some ideas for great holiday movies to watch with your family.

Do you have a favorite Christmas movie I didn’t mention here? Care to share your own favorite holiday movie titles? Please leave a comment; I’d love to hear what Christmas movies you love to watch each year.

How to Create Your Own Spa at Home (and a Giveaway!)

spa-at-home
Why You Need to Create a Spa at Home

This time of year can be especially hectic and busy. As women in particular, we are prone to ignore our own needs for rest and rejuvenation. We may ignore signs that our bodies need relaxation and restoration. However, doing this for too long can lead to exhaustion and possible burn out.

Running around in a constant state of busyness and stress can take a toll. It’s important to find ways to refresh ourselves and relieve any stress that may have built up in our bodies.

If you find yourself harried and in need of a respite, but you can’t afford a trip to the spa, I have an idea for you. Why not create your own spa experience at home? You may not be able to have a full body massage or sit in a sauna, but there are many other things you can do at home to give that feeling of rejuvenation a visit to the spa brings.

Use a facial mask

Apply a facial mask of some kind, whether it is a clay mask, a sheet mask, or some other kind. Stress and exhaustion can be really bad for the skin, so taking the time to use a restorative mask can really help moisturize and repair your skin. Sheet masks can be fun. If you’ve never used one, it’s an interesting experience.

Here is a good one to try.

Take a bubble bath

Maybe this one seems obvious, but a good old fashioned hot bubble bath can do wonders for relaxing the mind and body. Light some candles, turn on some soft, relaxing music, and have a nice, long soak. I like to add essential oils and epsom salts to my bath water, but a bath bomb or scented bath salts are a nice option as well.

spa-at-home2

Some of my personal favorites are lavender essential oil and Spongelle bath sponges.

Moisturize

A pleasant smelling moisturizing oil or lotion can be soothing to the skin after a bath. I love lavender scented lotions. Slather it all over the skin for a nice pampered feeling.

aveeno-moisturizer

Aveeno has a really nice one.

Give yourself a mani/pedi

Take the time to clean, file, and paint your nails. Use a pumice stone on your heels. Apply oil to your cuticles. Even if you’re doing it yourself, the results will make you feel pampered and special. You’ll be glad you took the time to do this.

My favorite brand of nail polish right now is Wet ’n Wild 1 Step Wonder Gel polish. For a polish that doesn’t require curing under a light, it’s quite durable.

If you’re feeling frazzled and in need of some rest and relaxation, take the time to create a spa experience for yourself right at home. It will do wonders for your mind and body.

And now, it’s giveaway time!

One very special winner will receive a Create Your Own Spa at Home kit! I’ve curated all of my personal favorite at home spa items for you, ones I know you’ll love, too. Be sure to enter for your chance to win this kit. (It could also make a great gift for someone special in your life.)

Modest Fashion Friday: Maxi Dress Styled 3 Ways

A knit maxi dress is the ultimate in comfortable clothing. Wearing one is like wearing your pajamas all day.

A simple knit maxi dress it also a blank slate. It can be a wonderful opportunity to accessorize creatively. It can be so much fun to take a plain, simple T-shirt dress and add accessories to create different looks. It’s so versatile. The possibilities are endless!

I’ve created three different looks with one simple knit maxi dress. This dress is one I’ve had for many years. It’s extremely comfortable and stretchy. The color is a beautiful soft blue that can be accented with a variety of colors and textures. It’s truly a blank canvas just waiting for imaginative accessorizing!

If you want to duplicate what I’ve done here, dresses like this one are easy to find

For the first look, I paired the dress with an asymmetrical front vest and floral belt. The vest adds some color and interest and the belt defines the waistline. I wore this with my favorite pair of booties for a fun, just-a-notch-above-casual look.

This second look combines the simplicity of the maxi dress with a cream colored denim jacket and blue ombre scarf. This gives off a laid-back, fun vibe. The jacket and scarf give a bit of extra warmth as well, making this layered look a perfect outfit for the winter months. Navy blue flats finish the look in a simple, classic way.

The final look I created with this dress is a bit more dressed up. It could even be work appropriate. I added a blue and beige pinstriped blazer and a statement necklace to the dress, elevating the look. Nude colored heels also add to the dressiness factor of this outfit, making it just right for a bit more formal occasion.

Taking a simple maxi dress and adding accessories is a wonderful way to utilize basic wardrobe pieces in a strategic way to create many looks from just a few items. This formula could work in many different instances.

Some simple wardrobe staples and a little ingenuity can go a long way toward creating some amazing outfits.

How to Deal With Wintertime Dry Skin

wintertime-dry-skin

Winter weather brings with it cold, harsh wind and dry indoor air. With these come dry skin, at least for most of us. Wintertime dry skin can be hard to deal with. Also, as our skin ages, it becomes more and more prone to being dryer in winter.

There are a number of ways to combat the dry skin wintertime may bring. Here are a few.

1. Moisturize

aveeno-moisturizer

This may seem obvious, but it bears mentioning, mainly because it’s one I personally tend to forget to do as regularly as I should. Slather yourself up with moisturizer after a shower. Rub some in after you wash your hands. Keep some handy throughout the day to manage into your hands when they are feeling especially dry. (My favorite moisturizer right now is Aveeno Positively Nourishing Calming Lotion.)

2. Humidify

humidifier

Keep a humidifier running in your home. If you heat your home with wood, this is essential. With any kind of heating system, it is important to keep the air in your home humidified throughout the winter months. Your skin will not be as dry, and it will help keep dry eyes and sinuses at bay as well. (This is the humidifier we use.)

3. Hydrate

water-glass

Drink plenty of water. Hydrating on the inside will help keep the outside (your skin) from being too dry as well. Hydration is extremely important for our overall health and wellbeing, yet most people do not drink nearly enough water.

To know if you’re drinking enough, calculate half your body weight in ounces. For instance, if you weight 140 pounds, you should drink 70 ounces of water a day. That’s a lot of water, and that’s only a starting point—a number to aim for. Ideally, you should be drinking even more than that.

Some results of drinking enough water could be: clear, hydrated skin, more energy, weight loss, and fewer cravings. Try drinking more water and see what happens.

Wintertime dry skin can be a challenge, but these strategies can help combat it.

Do you have any tips for dealing with dry skin? If so, please leave a comment and share them. I’d love to hear more ideas for how to keep dry skin at bay this winter!
