Easter dresses

Easter Sunday is quickly approaching. Are you looking for the perfect dress to wear? I have a few suggestions for you!

I love the tradition of wearing new clothing for Easter. It is a very special day in the Christian calendar, and it deserves special treatment.

For our family, it is a day spent in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a wonderful opportunity to remember, in praise and worship, the miracle of the resurrection. It is symbolic of new beginnings, of new life found in Him.

So, it is fitting to adorn ourself in new clothes.

Easter is also somewhat of a harbinger of spring. It is, in many ways, the unofficial start to the spring season. The tulips are blooming, the days are warmer, and it’s a great time to break out all our pretty spring dresses!

So here are my personal picks for the perfect Easter dresses.

Modest Fashion Friday: A Little Bit Boho

modern boho look

This week’s modest fashion post is on the casual side. I’ve had an extremely busy couple of weeks, and quick and casual looks like this one have been my go-to.

All of the pieces in this outfit are ones I have had for a while. They are tried and true favorites I’ve worn again and again through several seasons. There’s just something grounding and comforting about familiar clothing items you know will be comfortable and well fitting.

Boho chic

This denim maxi skirt has been a favorite of mine for a long time. It’s a wardrobe staple that has stood the test of time for me. A high quality item like this one can serve well for many years and if it’s a classic design like this one, it can withstand trends and still look current.

A simple scoop neck T-shirt is an absolute necessity. Every wardrobe should include at least one. This lavender tee is one I have reached for again and again over the years. I love the color and the fit. It’s easy to dress up or down depending on the occasion. It’s held up well through many washes.

These simple purple flats were a fun find at a local discount store. Flats are such a classic, they can complement almost any outfit. And when they’re in a fun color like these are, they can accessorize and bring life into a simple wardrobe.

I love the pattern on the scarf I chose for this outfit. Believe it or not, I found it at Goodwill. The print of the scarf really lends the boho vibe to this outfit. I love the crinkly texture of the scarf, which compliments the pattern nicely. And the fringe really adds to the overall effect.

This was a fun casual look that was easy to put together and super comfortable to wear.

Getting Ready for Spring with a Floral Dress

Spring is finally in the air around here. The air is fresh and clean, the snow is melting, and the temperatures are running the gamut from 30 degrees all the way up to 65. It’s time to break out some spring fashion items!

To me, nothing says spring is here like a flowing floral dress. Wearing a soft chiffon dress in a pretty floral print is the perfect way to welcome a spring day.

This dress is a ThredUp find. It’s shorter than I’m comfortable wearing, but I solved that problem by styling it with a knee length a-line skirt in a lovely green that brings out the color of the leaves on the dress. The flow of the dress works nicely with the slightly more structured skirt. The combination makes for a fresh, pretty look that’s still modest.

This outfit exudes femininity. Can you get much more girly-girl that a pink floral chiffon dress?

I wore this dress and skirt with a pair of Nine West heels I’ve had for several years. I love the slightly vintage feel of these shoes. The ankle strap is my favorite detail on these pretty little shoes. The color is neutral and the style is timeless. They pair perfectly with the feminine look of the dress.

Modest Fashion Friday: Wearing o’ the Green

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

green sweater and floral skirt

Even if you’re not Irish, I think we can all agree there’s something especially appealing about this holiday. It commemorates a man of God who selflessly dedicated his life to the service of others. He followed God’s call to spread the Gospel in Ireland, sharing the love of Christ with them and impacting the entire culture.

Plus, it’s just a fun holiday, don’t you think?

This day is also a special one for our family for another reason. This was my mother-in-law’s birthday. Though she passed away five years ago, she is still dearly loved and greatly missed. Ironically, she had an incredible knack for finding four-leaf-clovers!

In honor of this day, I’m featuring the color green. I’ve been told I have a bit o’ Irish in me, so I’m dressing the part!

This sweater set is one I’ve had for a while. It’s one of those classic pieces that never goes out of style. It is a wardrobe staple that I’ve worn a lot over the years.

The skirt is another floral one. (I seem to be featuring a lot of floral lately!) I love the soft, subtle shade of green in this skirt. The pattern has a slightly romantic feel with the large hydrangeas and broad leaves. It’s not your typical floral skirt, but it fits in beautifully with the color palette of many of my other clothes. I like the double slits on either side of the skirt. They are much more modest than slits in many knee length skirts.

These beige heels are ones I wear often. They are perfect neutrals that truly go with any outfit. The earrings were a gift from my parents several years ago. They picked them up in a little jewelry shop in Edgartown, on Martha’s Vineyard. I love the green stones in these earrings. The finish of the silver has a gorgeous antiqued quality. These are definitely some of my favorite earrings. I paired them with a simple silver chain necklace I’ve had in my collection for many years.

Even if you’re not Irish, wear a little green today. It’s a festive way to join in the spirit of the day!

Modest Fashion Friday: Jewel Tones—Amethyst and Emerald

Jewel tones—they are so rich and beautiful. They bring to mind royalty. Though I don’t often wear jewel tones, when I do I always feel regal in them.

purple-sweater-green-pleated-skirt

This outfit was one I wore to church recently. It was perfect for the late winter morning on which I wore it.

The cardigan is the perfect weight for late winter and early spring days. It gives warmth without being too heavy. The color of this cardigan is deep and lovely. A sleeveless shell in a slightly lighter shade of purple accents the darker color of the cardigan perfectly.

A dark, almost forest green pleated skirt compliments the sweater nicely. The length of this skirt is modest and very flattering.

Nude pumps make a nicely neutral addition to this outfit. I chose to carry a purple handbag in a shade similar to the sweater. I love the design of this bag. It has a slightly slouchy, unstructured quality I really like. It’s not a designer brand or anything fancy, but I like it just the same.

I have to mention these delightful earrings. They are drop style, set with delicate colored moonstones in silver settings. They were a gift from my husband for my birthday last year. And they’re one of my favorite pairs of earrings.

Jewel tones are so enjoyable to wear, and I felt very put together and nicely presentable in this outfit.

Spring Transition Pieces That Should Be in Every Wardrobe

Spring is so close you can almost reach out and touch it. With the weather fluctuating wildly between cold and dreary and warm and sunny, choosing the right clothing can be tricky. That’s when it’s important to have a few key transition pieces that can take a wardrobe from winter into spring in style.

Chambray shirt

chambray-and-stripes3

Every stylish woman’s wardrobe should include a chambray shirt. They are truly the workhorse of every closet. I can think of few wardrobe pieces more versatile. A nice chambray shirt can be styled in so many different ways. It can be dressed up or down, depending on what you pair it with. Layered under a pullover sweater, a chambray button-down can keep you warm on a chilly day. Worn by itself with the sleeves rolled up, it’s perfect for a casual look on a warmer day. It can even be worn with a pretty tulle skirt for a dressier outfit.

Pleated midi skirt

pleated floral skirt

A pleated midi skirt is an absolute must for every stylish wardrobe. Can there be a piece of clothing more feminine while still being so comfortable? Modest and pretty, the pleated midi skirt is a perfect transition piece for a winter-to-spring wardrobe. In a heavier fabric, it can lend some warmth, but the length can be great for a sunny spring day.

Suede booties

suede booties

Not as warm as knee high boots, but often as practical, a nice pair of booties can be a great piece to wear in early spring when there may still be some ice or snow on the ground. They are also great for those days in early spring which tend to be drizzly or rainy. Slogging through mud puddles is easier in a pair of booties than in flats or sandals, wouldn’t you agree?

Hunter boots (or rain boots)

Or, you could wear boots actually designed for mud.

rain boots

Surprising as it may seem, the hunter or rain boot is one extremely practical accessory which has become quite a trend. A bright colored pair of “wellies” can not only keep your feet dry on a rainy day, but they can accent the right outfit as well. Around here, this style of boot is known as “mud boots,” probably because these boots are most often worn in that season affectionately known in this part of the world as “mud season.” (Yes, here in rural New England, we have an entire season named after mud. If you’re ever here during mud season, you’ll understand why we call it that.)

You may have noticed this particular clothing item has some significance around here. After all, the name of this blog is “MUD BOOTS and Pearls.” Coincidence? I think not…

Three-quarter sleeve cardigan

pink cardigan

I have long been a fan of the 3/4 sleeve cardigan. Whether in cotton or cashmere, a pretty cardigan can be the perfect spring layering piece. Every girl should own one. The 3/4 length sleeve is a versatile length, able to add some warmth to an outfit, but not too heat-inducing. In a lovely spring color, this is a piece that can be worn again and again throughout the seasonal transition.

These five fashion pieces can help any wardrobe transition stylishly and beautifully from winter into spring.

Do have any must-have transition pieces in your own wardrobe? Any I missed mentioning here? Please share in the comments.
