12 Books to Read This Year

12-books-to-read-this-year

Looking for some good books to read this year? I’ve got some recommendations for you. Here are 12—one book suggestion for each month of the year. Read on to learn what books I recommend and why.

Each year, I set a reading goal for myself. Most years, I set a goal of reading 50 books. I don’t always reach that goal, but it gives me something to strive for. Of those 50 (or less!) books, I try to choose from a variety of genres and topics. It’s good to be strategic in your reading choices. Challenging, informative, or just plain entertaining, different books have different purposes.

Last year, I didn’t quite reach my goal. I did make it to 48 books read. Of those 48 books, several stood out as ones I would recommend to others. Here is my list of 12 books I think you should read this year.

Business

Money-Making Mom: How Every Woman Can Earn More and Make a Difference by Crystal Paine

I’ve mentioned this book before, but I think it bears repeating that this is an excellent read and one I highly recommend. If you’re looking for a way to make money from home, you need to read this book. Crystal Paine is a well-known author, speaker, and blogger. To say she knows what she’s talking about on this subject would be an understatement. Crystal shares some brilliant ideas for making money as a stay-at-home mom (or anyone who wants the freedom to work from home). What I found most inspiring was how Crystal challenges her readers to pursue success with the intent to be able to help others. She definitely practices what she preaches. She is very generous with the resources she has been blessed with. This book gave me the boost needed to start thinking bigger in my own life.

The $100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau

There are a lot of opportunities available right now for those wishing to become entrepreneurs. All it takes is a good idea, a desire to work hard, and a willingness to take a few risks. If you are looking for a way to break free of the typical 9 to 5 job, or if you’re a stay-at-home mom like me and you’re looking for a way to earn some extra income from home, you’ll appreciate this book. It’s a quick read, but it contains a lot of really helpful information.

Biography

Daughter of Empire: My Life as a Mountbatten by Pamela Hicks

This book gives a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the British aristocracy in the early to mid twentieth century. It is the memoir of Lady Pamela Hicks, cousin of Queen Elizabeth. If you ever wanted an actual behind the scenes look at the royal family, you will enjoy this book. Lady Hicks was a lady-in-waiting to the queen in the early days of the queen’s marriage. Her father was a prominent figure in World War II military history. She is an interesting and accomplished person in her own right. This one is a captivating read.

As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes

If you like The Princess Bride, you will love this book. It is an account of the on-set antics of the cast and crew as told by “Westley” himself. To fully appreciate this book, you should listen to the audiobook narrated by Cary Elwes. Some of the other cast members, as well as director Rob Reiner, lend their voices to the telling. Listen to the audiobook to truly experience this book. We’re huge Princess Bride fans around here, so I enjoyed this book immensely.

Christian Living

Own Your Life: How to Grow a Legacy of Faith, Love, and Spiritual Influence by Sally Clarkson

I consider Sally Clarkson a mentor of mine. I have read her books and gleaned so much from each one. Own Your Life is no exception. In this book, she candidly shares about some of her own struggles and triumphs. She encourages her readers to find purpose in everyday life, to live with intent and find meaning in whatever we are doing. This is an inspiring and insightful read.

Longing for Paris: One Woman’s Search for Joy, Beauty , and Adventure—Right Where She Is by Sarah Mae

There’s been a bit of hype surrounding this book, and for good reason. I think the author, Sarah Mae, hits a nerve for many young moms in today’s culture. Motherhood is hard and sometimes it can be tempting to wish you could escape the mundane routines of your everyday life for exotic places filled with adventure. In her typical self-deprecatingly entertaining way, Sarah Mae encourages her readers to see the beauty and adventure all around us. She shares her own journey toward finding joy and meaning in ordinary, everyday things.

Fiction

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty

This book is the first of Liane Moriarty’s works that I read and it’s what made me a fan of hers. Extremely entertaining, this is a quick read. The premise of this book is clever and unusual. The main character, Alice, wakes up one day to discover she has amnesia and can’t remember the past 10 years of her life. Her journey to discover who she has become, and why, is fascinating. What she learns about herself is revealing and thought provoking. Like most of Moriarty’s books, be aware that there is a bit of strong language.

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

This is a powerful and poignant story set during World War II. It is the moving telling of two young lives and how they are affected by the events surrounding them at that turbulent time. Their reactions to what happens and how their lives intersect is what propels this story. Don’t miss this poignant and painfully beautiful story.

The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

A book I’ve talked about before, this is an excellent read. It is touching and heart wrenching and challenging. As someone who has experienced similar loss, the dilemma of the main characters resonated with me. The choices they made were not the ones I would have made, but I could understand the motivation behind them. This was a deeply moving story beautifully told.

History

In The Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick

I was born on Martha’s Vineyard, which means I grew up hearing plenty of stories about the history of whaling in New England. This particular story is one not soon forgotten. The whaleship Essex was run into by a whale; what happened after that is almost unbelievable. This is a chilling account of desperation and survival. Nathaniel Philbrick has a way of describing historical events in captivating detail. All his books are excellent, and this one is no exception. If you are at all interested in whaling, naval history, or human nature in the face of extreme challenges, you’ll appreciate this compelling book.

To Marry an English Lord by Gail MacColl

Downton Abbey fans will enjoy this book. It gives an account of the many daughters of American “new money” millionaires in the mid to late nineteenth century who married into the British aristocracy. The families of these young ladies found them their titled husband in an attempt to bolster their social standing. The resulting marriages were a fascinating mix of happy ones, indifferent ones, miserable ones, and ones of pure convenience. This is an incredibly entertaining glimpse into this interesting time in social history.

Parenting

Caught Up in a Story: Fostering a Storyformed Life of Great Books & Imagination with Your Children by Sarah Clarkson

This book renewed my vision for reading with my children. As a homeschooling mom and a book lover myself, I’ve always valued reading to my children. It’s been a part of our day-to-day family life since my oldest child was born. Our home is filled with good, well-written classic children’s literature. This book reminded me of what powerful tools those books can be. It’s an inspiring glimpse into how reading can shape a child’s heart and mind. I’d highly recommend this book for any parent or educator.

So there you have it—my 12 book recommendations for this year. Do you have any recent reads you’d recommend? I’m always looking for a good book. Leave a comment if you’d like to share a recommendation.

Erin Condren Life Planner: Start Your Year Organized

EC-life-planner

I am what might be considered a planner addict. I have been using a daily planner consistently since I was around 14 years old (back then I used it to keep track of school assignments and activities—yes, I will proudly admit that I was a huge nerd). That means I have over 25 years of experience with using a daily planner. Honestly, I have a hard time functioning without one.

See, told you I was a planner addict

I have used a lot of different planners over the years. Cheap Dollar Store versions, Day Timers, Filofax, free printable planners—I’ve used them all. It seemed that no matter what planner I tried, I had to compromise on what I really needed in some particular area. One planner would have a few things I liked, but inevitably there was something about the design or what the planner offered that didn’t fit perfectly with how I use my planners. So, I would make do.

That is, until I discovered the Erin Condren Life Planner. Finally, after all these years I’ve found a planner designed perfectly for me. It’s like the lovely folks at Erin Condren went inside my head to discover exactly what I’ve always been looking for in a planner. For the past three years, I have very happily used a Life Planner and I must say, I’m in planner heaven.

Why I love the Erin Condren Life Planner

I love the layout of the Life Planner. It’s clean and simple. I like that there are options to choose from on the weekly spread pages—you can choose between a vertical, horizontal, or time blocked layout. Personally, I’m a vertical layout gal.

eclifeplanner4

There’s lots of white space throughout the planner, which I love. I like plenty of space to write my notes and lists. The boxes on the monthly spread are large and the design is simple.

Inspirational quotes are sprinkled throughout the planner. They are well chosen and I find each one to be encouraging. These uplifting quotes are one of the hallmarks of the Erin Condren brand.

Those interchangeable covers, though!

One of the best and most unique features of the Life Planner is the interchangeable covers. The covers of the planner are designed to be able to be removed and replaced with a new or different cover. Additional covers can be ordered separately. And you can completely personalize any cover, which I love! Each season, new cover designs are released, making it so much fun to change out the cover depending on the time of year.

I can’t say enough good things about the Erin Condren Life Planner. I’m completely smitten. Can’t wait to start using my new Life Planner for 2017! Hooray for new years and fresh starts!

I simply love the Erin Condren Life Planner and wanted to share my experience with using it. If you use this referral link to the Erin Condren website, you will receive $10 off your first order from ErinCondren.com.

How about you? Are you a fellow planner addict? Have you found a daily planner you absolutely love? Tell me about it in the comments.

Winter Fab Fit Fun Unboxing

winter-fab-fit-fun-box-open

Fab Fit Fun is a quarterly subscription box I’ve been receiving for about a year now. Each box I’ve received has had a nice variety of products included. I’ve really enjoyed learning about new brands through the boxes as well.

I received my winter Fab Fit Fun box last week and I wanted to give you a little peek into what’s inside.

D.L & Co. Candle

winter-fab-fit-fun-candle

This candle is so pretty. It’s a good size and seems really well made. And the scent is yummy! It’s listed as being Blackberry Nectar. Can’t wait to use this one!

Gorjana Necklace

winter-fab-fit-fun-jewelry

What a pretty design on this necklace! It is a lariat style in gold. Very nice. Gorjana jewelry designs are so unique. They’re also very much on trend. I have a couple of their pieces and really like them.

Marie Mae Company Thank You Card set

winter-fab-fit-fun-stationary

You can never have too many note cards. These thank you note cards are cute and cheerful.

Moleskine 2017 Weekly Planner

I already ordered my day planner (an Erin Condren Life Planner—the best planner I’ve ever used!) for 2017, but my daughter wanted a weekly planner, so this will go to her. It’s even in her favorite color—purple!

Butter London Iconoclast Mega Volume Lacquer Mascara

winter-fab-fit-fun-beauty

I’ve only tried a couple of items from Butter London—their products tend to be on the pricier side. What I’ve tried, though, I really liked. I’m looking forward to trying this mascara.

O.R.G Skincare Mineral Face Peel

I’m not really sure what this product is or what it’s supposed to do. It should be interesting to try. That’s one of the things I like most about getting these subscription boxes; there are plenty of opportunities to try things I might not otherwise.

Anderson Lilley Beach Butter Body Cream

This body cream smells so good! The formula seems thick and creamy and moisturizing. Can’t wait to see what kind of results I get with this cream.

The booklet that is included in each box always highlights and explains a bit about each product. This box’s booklet also includes recipes, diy wrapping paper ideas, and photography tips. In addition to all that, in the booklet, there is information on Starlight Children’s Foundation, an organization that offers entertainment programs to chronically or terminally ill children.

The total retail value of this box is $252.95. The actual price of the box is significantly less than that ($49.99). Every box always turns out to be a great value. If you’re interested in subscribing to Fab Fit Fun to receive a box of your own each season, you can follow this link.

5 Authors Who Write the Best Christmas Novels

5-authors-christmas-novels

There’s something especially cozy about reading a Christmas centered story while curled up under a warm blanket, a fire burning brightly in the fireplace. It’s a perfect way to spend a quiet December afternoon. Personally, I love the addition of a nice cup of tea or hot chocolate to round out the experience.

Christmas books (novellas in particular) are a genre uniquely suited the the few stolen moments in an otherwise very busy season. A quick, festive or sentimental read is just the thing when you have a little time and want to celebrate the holidays in a quieter and more personal way.

Books centered around the theme of Christmas also make wonderful gifts for any book lovers in your life.

There’s really only one problem here, though. There are a huge number of Christmas novels out there; it’s hard to know which are worth the time to read. Many well known authors have written several Christmas related books. Knowing which authors have the best books can help narrow down the choices.

Here’s a list of authors who have written several books I highly recommend reading this Christmas (or anytime, really). I have read and enjoyed at least one book by each of the authors on this list.

  1. Max Lucado (author of The Christmas Candle, Because of Bethlehem, The Christmas Child, An Angel’s Story, and more)
  2. Richard Paul Evans (The Christmas Box, The Timepiece, The Mistletoe Secret, and more)
  3. Donna VanLiere (The Christmas Shoes, The Christmas Town, The Christmas Light, The Christmas Journey, and many more)
  4. Karen Kingsbury (The Bridge, A Baxter Family Christmas, The Red Gloves Collection, A Treasury of Christmas Miracles)
  5. Melody Carlson (The Christmas Angel Project, Christmas at Harrington’s, The Christmas Joy Ride, The Christmas Shoppe, and many, many more)

If you’re in the mood for nostalgic Christmas cheer, you’ll definitely want to check out some of these authors’ books.

Happy reading!

Christmas Movies Your Family Will Love

christmas-movies-your-family-will-love

We have a little tradition in our house. During the month of December, we watch as many Christmas themed movies together as we can find time for. We have some favorites we watch year after year, but we also try to add a few new ones each year as well. Our favorite Christmas movies cover a wide variety of genres, from comedies, to animated classics, to heart warming family films.

Maybe you have a similar tradition in your own home. Perhaps your family has a few Christmas movies you watch every year. But maybe you’re looking for some ideas for new holiday films to try this season.

If your family is anything like mine, you’ll be able to find a few new favorites among this list.

christmas-movies

The Star of Bethlehem

I start the list with this movie because it’s important to remember what the Christmas season is really all about. Every time I watch this movie, I get chills. It induces a spirit of awe in me with each viewing. It’s unlike any other Christmas movie I’ve ever seen. I guarantee if you watch this one, you’ll be amazed at the intricacies of God’s handiwork in the universe. Your heart will cry out in praise to Him—I know mine does whenever I see this film.

The Christmas Shoes

This one will make you cry. It’s a touching movie about love and about discovering what’s truly important in life. If you haven’t seen this one, you need to. We’ve all heard the song; the movie’s much, much better.

The Christmas Box

My grandmother gave me the book by Richard Paul Evans (which has become a holiday classic) when I was a teenager. The story stuck with me for a very long time. In my opinion, the movie is just as good as the book. I don’t want to give anything away if you’ve never seen it, but I will say that having now experienced the loss of a child, the story of this movie resonates with me on a much deeper level than I ever imagined it would when we first started our annual viewings of it.

The Timepiece

This movie is the prequel to The Christmas Box. It is a touching tale set during World War II. A very moving story of forgiveness and faith and the power of love. This one is also based on a book by Richard Paul Evans.

White Christmas

I really don’t need to say anything about this one, do I? Who hasn’t seen this movie? It’s definitely a time-tested holiday classic. It’s also one of my personal favorites. The music, the dancing, the story, it’s all absolutely perfect. Plus, the costumes are utterly gorgeous.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

Another classic everyone must see. The nostalgia attached to this one is almost as good as the actually movie itself. I love the scene where Linus is reciting the scripture passage from Luke 2 about the birth of Jesus. Another great reminder that “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

Elf

Such an entertaining movie, this is an all-time favorite of a couple of my kids. It’s fun and silly and sweet at times. (There are a couple of questionable scenes that might not be best for younger viewers, though.)

Christmas With the Kranks

This movie is hilarious! The concept is clever, and the execution is flawless. Another one that has a couple of questionable scenes for little ones, but overall a family friendly film.

 It’s a Wonderful Life

Another classic that bears mentioning because it is just such a great movie. I’m so attached to this movie—I have very fond memories of watching it as a little girl with my dad.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

A well known story told with a twist—a Muppets twist. For a movie with a whole bunch of weird puppets portraying the characters, it’s heart warming and has all the appeal of Dickens’ original tale. But it has something even better…Kermit the frog…as Bob Cratchit. Need I say more?

The Christmas Card

This movie is so sweet. It’s a love story set at Christmas time. The main characters are endearing, the story is interesting, and the message is positive. There are some really cute one-liners in this one, too. My husband loves to quote a specific handful of lines from this movie.

The Nativity Story

I’ll start and end this list with the same message. Jesus is at the center of Christmas. The Christmas story is about Him, His birth, the purpose for which He came to Earth, which was to die for the sins of His people. This movie beautifully portals the story of that first Christmas. We always watch this one on Christmas Eve. It’s a wonderful way to bring our focus back to the One who deserves our worship, not just on Christmas, but every single day of the year.

Any movies on this list you’ve never seen? I highly recommend you watch them. Who knows, one of these might just become a new favorite for you. Or maybe this list has reminded you of a forgotten favorite of your own that you’d like to view again. At any rate, I hope it’s given you some ideas for great holiday movies to watch with your family.

Do you have a favorite Christmas movie I didn’t mention here? Care to share your own favorite holiday movie titles? Please leave a comment; I’d love to hear what Christmas movies you love to watch each year.

How to Create Your Own Spa at Home (and a Giveaway!)

spa-at-home
Why You Need to Create a Spa at Home

This time of year can be especially hectic and busy. As women in particular, we are prone to ignore our own needs for rest and rejuvenation. We may ignore signs that our bodies need relaxation and restoration. However, doing this for too long can lead to exhaustion and possible burn out.

Running around in a constant state of busyness and stress can take a toll. It’s important to find ways to refresh ourselves and relieve any stress that may have built up in our bodies.

If you find yourself harried and in need of a respite, but you can’t afford a trip to the spa, I have an idea for you. Why not create your own spa experience at home? You may not be able to have a full body massage or sit in a sauna, but there are many other things you can do at home to give that feeling of rejuvenation a visit to the spa brings.

Use a facial mask

Apply a facial mask of some kind, whether it is a clay mask, a sheet mask, or some other kind. Stress and exhaustion can be really bad for the skin, so taking the time to use a restorative mask can really help moisturize and repair your skin. Sheet masks can be fun. If you’ve never used one, it’s an interesting experience.

spa-at-home4

Here is a good one to try.

Take a bubble bath

Maybe this one seems obvious, but a good old fashioned hot bubble bath can do wonders for relaxing the mind and body. Light some candles, turn on some soft, relaxing music, and have a nice, long soak. I like to add essential oils and epsom salts to my bath water, but a bath bomb or scented bath salts are a nice option as well.

spa-at-home2

Some of my personal favorites are lavender essential oil and Spongelle bath sponges.

Moisturize

A pleasant smelling moisturizing oil or lotion can be soothing to the skin after a bath. I love lavender scented lotions. Slather it all over the skin for a nice pampered feeling.

aveeno-moisturizer

Aveeno has a really nice one.

Give yourself a mani/pedi

Take the time to clean, file, and paint your nails. Use a pumice stone on your heels. Apply oil to your cuticles. Even if you’re doing it yourself, the results will make you feel pampered and special. You’ll be glad you took the time to do this.

spa-at-home3

My favorite brand of nail polish right now is Wet ’n Wild 1 Step Wonder Gel polish. For a polish that doesn’t require curing under a light, it’s quite durable.

If you’re feeling frazzled and in need of some rest and relaxation, take the time to create a spa experience for yourself right at home. It will do wonders for your mind and body.

And now, it’s giveaway time!

One very special winner will receive a Create Your Own Spa at Home kit! I’ve curated all of my personal favorite at home spa items for you, ones I know you’ll love, too. Be sure to enter for your chance to win this kit. (It could also make a great gift for someone special in your life.)

spa-at-home1

The giveaway will run for ten days and the winner will be chosen at random at the close of the giveaway.
