Modest Fashion Friday: End of Summer Dress

modest-fashion-end-of-summer

Welcome to Modest Fashion Friday! Each week, I will feature a modest fashion outfit I have worn recently. Hope you enjoy and maybe even get inspired!

Summer is slowly winding to a close here in New England. The leaves are changing, and wardrobes are beginning to do the same. Still, there have been a few warm days here. I’m soaking in the last of the summer weather by wearing some of my favorite outfits from the past few months. This maxi dress has definitely been a favorite. I love the subtle ombre effect in the skirt. The gray tee is a staple I’ve worn often. The sandals are surprisingly comfy. And the necklace and earrings are new–I absolutely love both! I have a feeling they are going to get a lot of use in the near future.

What I Want My Daughters to Know About Beauty

what-daughters-know-beauty

I have daughters who are quickly approaching young womanhood. The topic of beauty and appearance is coming up more and more often in our home these days. With our culture so saturated with images of women depicted as simply objects to lust after, or androgynous figures who are no different than men, it can be confusing for young women to know how to think about how they look.

How should our daughters really feel about their own appearances?

For that matter, how should we as grown woman feel about ours?

It’s important to me that my girls have a healthy, balanced view of beauty and femininity. I want them to know it’s okay to want to be pretty, and put effort into our appearance. I also want them to know that we shouldn’t be obsessed with how we look. We shouldn’t think that our appearance somehow makes us better or worse than other people, either.

A pure and beautiful heart is infinitely more important that how we look. My girls need to know this.

How will I instill this in them?

Model a correct mindset for them

One important way I can help my daughters have a healthy view of their appearance is to model it for them. If I am obsessed with my weight, or always complaining about some feature I see as a flaw, or constantly concerned with how others judge my looks, my daughters will follow that example. At the same time, if I put effort into my appearance without letting it become all-consuming, I am showing them a healthy way to look at beauty. It’s important for me to be content with the body God gave me while doing my best to take good care of it. This includes careful grooming, nutrition, and fitness.

Teach them the difference between caring for their appearance and being vain

It’s okay to want to be attractive; it is not okay to be vain about it. Vanity is having an attitude of superiority because of your appearance. It is an unpleasant trait, and certainly one I don’t want my daughters to develop. I want to teach them that God created them the way they are and they owe him gratitude for that. Because He made them, they have a duty to care for their appearance. Simple as that.

Encourage them to focus on developing inner beauty

We’ve all heard the saying, “Beauty is as beauty does.” It’s true, isn’t it? Have you ever met a woman who was outwardly beautiful but swore like a sailor? Or had a mean streak that could leave a wake of despair and destruction a mile wide? Or was so selfish she behaved as if everyone in her life was there to serve and bow down to her? Did it really matter how pretty she was?

I want my daughters to know the importance of being kind and compassionate. It is so much better to be a generous, loving person than to be able to win beauty pageants.

Remind them of their femininity

As women, our femininity is such a gift! Being a lady is such a privilege. I love to wear pretty, feminine clothes, heels and scarves and jewelry, and I want my girls to embrace their femininity in the same way. No, they don’t have to love heels and scarves, but I hope they will love being women and desire to express that through their appearance. I hope they will want to look like ladies. There are so few ladies left in our culture. What a breath of fresh air it can be to those around us when we bring out our lovely femininity.

Show them beauty can be practical

Our family lives in the country. We have farm animals. We have gardens. And of course, we have plenty of mud. It may not be practical to go around in silk blouses and 4” heels everyday. But I still try to make an effort to put on makeup, dress in a clean and attractive outfit, and fix my hair everyday. I am trying to teach my girls to do the same. I think it’s important to our own sense of wellbeing and overall attitude to look presentable everyday.

Help them appreciate their own unique form of beauty

Real beauty comes in many forms. We each have our own personal expression of beauty. A woman is always most beautiful when she is being true to who she was created to be. I want my girls to be comfortable with being themselves. That will translate into them becoming their most beautiful selves. Confidence in who they are is a gift I am trying to give all of my children, especially my daughters.

As my girls continue to mature, I am beginning to see each of them develop these views—with their own individual slant. One of my girls is more outdoorsy, yet she still knows how to put together a lovely look for herself. Another of my girls is a girly girl who loves to prettify herself, but she is coming to understand the balance that is needed.

I love seeing my daughters grow and learn in areas like this. It’s such a privilege to able to teach and encourage them as they grow into beautiful young women.

My Nighttime Skincare Routine

I thought I would share my nighttime skincare routine. I have somewhat sensitive skin, so I have to be careful which products I use. The products I am currently using seem to have a good balance for my skin type, which tends toward combination/slightly dry. I don’t need a lot of extra moisturization this time of year (I definitely need extra moisture in the winter, though). A light moisturizer works fine. I’m not sure how long I will be able to say that at this point…I have officially reached (gulp) middle age now.

Step 1

I start my nighttime skincare routine by removing my makeup with the Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes. I love these because they do a great job getting almost all the makeup off—even waterproof eye makeup—but they are not full of all kinds of harsh chemicals that will irritate my skin.

Step 2

Next, I take a warm, wet washcloth and lay it on my face for a few seconds. This gets off any residue from the cleansing cloths and helps open the pores for a more thorough cleansing.

Step 3

Then I use my Clarisonic Facial Brush to clean and condition my face and neck. I absolutely love my Clarisonic. It took a lot for me to decide to purchase one in the first place, but I am so glad I did. The price tag is steep, but it really is worth it. It gets my skin so clean and has improved the texture as well. I choose to use the Clinique foaming facial cleansing soap with it. Again, this cleanser is effective without having a long list of chemicals in the ingredients. Following this, I rinse my face and neck thoroughly.

Step 4

Now that my face is nice and clean, with no traces of dirt or makeup left, I apply a light moisturizer. Currently, the moisturizer I’m using is Osea Atmosphere Protection Cream. The ingredients are all natural and it has a light, fresh scent. I received this moisturizer in a FabFItFun subscription box a while back, and I’ve really liked using it.

Step 5

Lastly, I apply an eye cream. Right now, I’m using the Acure Eye Cream. I ordered this eye cream from Grove Collaborative. It’s moisturizing without being heavy. It has all natural ingredients and it really works to smooth out fine lines.

When I have an occasional breakout or skin irritation, I also use a really helpful product called Spot Treatment for Irritated Skin. It’s made by a company named Bloom Naturals, which was started by a mom who needed to find a solution to her son’s skin problems. She created the Spot Treatment, and when it worked so well, she decided to offer it to others. Bloom Naturals has a line of other natural skincare products, as well.

This routine is working well for me right now. (I may change to a bit heavier moisturizer once the weather cools and my skin gets a bit drier.)

I love how simple and quick this routine is. My skin is in good condition and I hardly ever have any problems with it. It’s so great having a skincare approach that works so well.

How to Make Money While You Shop Online

how-to-make-money-shop-online

I absolutely love to shop online. In fact, other than buying groceries, I probably do about 85% of my shopping online. I love the convenience of being able to sit in the comfort of my own home (maybe even in my pajamas!), looking through item listings, taking my time thinking about purchases, or just popping on to order exactly what I know I need. It saves time, headaches, and for an introvert like me, the hassle of going out in public (just kidding…sort of).

So, what’s my secret for earning money shopping online?

My secret is Ebates.

For me, the online shopping experience has only gotten better since I discovered Ebates. Unfamiliar with Ebates? Ebates is a gateway website which connects shoppers with their favorite online stores. Shoppers then earn cash back on each purchase they make. Earning cash back is so easy with Ebates! You can earn cash back from a huge variety of stores, from Amazon to Nordstrom to Zenni Optical, and hundreds in between! I’ve used Ebates on so many purchases since I learned about it. I have actually received hundreds of dollars back at this point! It’s a great deal, and I love using it. I have the app on my phone, which makes it even easier to use to earn money back on everything I buy online.

Do you love to shop online as much as I do? If you’re going to buy something anyway, why not get some money back? It’s easy and it’s completely free to open an account with Ebates. So, what are you waiting for?

If you follow this link, you can start right now earning cash back for every dollar you spend. You’ll be able to earn cash whenever you shop at any of the hundreds of online stores listed on Ebates.

It’s amazing, and it makes shopping online even better! Check it out!

5 Apps That Help You Stay Organized

Blog Post Graphic2

As a homeschooling mom with a lot going on in my life and a busy schedule to keep track of, I have discovered the value of using mobile apps to stay organized. Here is a list of 5 of my favorite apps. I have used each of these apps and find them especially helpful. (Because an app is really only useful if you actually use it.)

Any.do

Any.do is an app that helps you keep your lists and notes together, accessible, and easy to organize. Manage your to do lists, schedule reminders on upcoming tasks, or keep a daily planner. You can even add notes and upload files to the app. It will sync everything across all your devices.

TickTick

TickTick is a task and time management app that enables you to keep lists, set reminders, and organize your calendar, all in one place. It even has a variety of attractive themes to choose from, so it can be customized to your preferences. And of course, it syncs across devices.

Dropbox

Dropbox can be extremely helpful for keeping and organizing files. It’s also a great platform to use for sharing files. If you are unfamiliar with Dropbox, it is a Cloud-based file system. You can download the app to your mobile device or computer, save files in Dropbox, and share files with others who have Dropbox access. The uses for Dropbox are limitless!

Google Keep

Google Keep is an amazing little app that enables you to save lists, photos, and even audio files. You can file away all your thoughts, ideas, and memories in one nifty, organized place. It has lots of other features as well, such as location-based or time-based reminders and the ability to color code everything. It will also sync across devices and can connect with other Google Keep users.

Evernote

And last but not least, my personal favorite app for keeping organized is Evernote. Evernote is a place to keep and file all sorts of things, including but not limited to emails, websites, notes, lists, ideas and so much more. You can even take a photo of an actual physical note or bill and, using Evernote’s built in scanner, create and store a file from it right in the app. You can file all that info away in a systematic way. It is so easy to find something once you’ve stored it in Evernote.

With Dropbox as a close second, I use Evernote by far the most of all these apps. I use it for storing and organizing important or useful information in a place. I love that I can easily access all my information from any of my devices. The layout is simple and there are many helpful features, such as the search bar and a tagging system.

I’m more of a pen and paper daily planner user myself, but for those who prefer an electronic based calendar, Tick Tick and Any.do are great options. Evernote and Google Keep are both amazingly helpful for storing all those lists, receipts and emails you need to keep track of. And Dropbox is by far the best and most widely used file sharing app. It’s also a perfect place to safely store important files (even photos!) in the Cloud.

You can save time and keep yourself organized with any of these helpful apps. Use them and you’ll knock out that to do list or remember those important appointments effortlessly!
